NEW ZEALAND BAND FOR OVERSEA TOUR
Six Christchurch bandsmen have been chosen as members of the National Band of New Zealand to compete in the 1962 world music championship in Holland in July They are T. Bremner, D. Christensen, C. Tregurtha, and B. J. Aldridge (Woolston Brass Band), and R. Simpson and J. Strong (Christchurch Fire Brigade Band). Mr K. L. G. Smith, of Lower Hutt, will be musical director, Mr R. Simpson, of Christchurch, deputy-conduc-tor, Mr K. Manning (Timaru > drum major, and Mr R. E. Belgrave, manager. Mr G. R. Mowat, of Christchurch, will be secretary of the band on its tour. The band members, announced by the selection committee of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association. are:— Soprano carnet, R. McKechnie (Papatoetoe Municipal). B flat cornet, T. Hanify (Wellington Fire Brigade). J. Ibell (Oamaru Garrison). K. Jarrett (Palmerston North City), L. R. Lee (Te Awamutu Municipal), L. Rush (Kaikorai), R. Simpson (Christchurch Fire Brigade) Flugel. D. H. Smith (Upper Hutt Municipal). Tenor horn: P. B. Adams (Te Awamutu Municipal), R McGavin (Palmerston North City). T. J. S. Smith (Alexandra Brass), G. T. Taiaroa (Timaru Municipal). (St. Kilda Municipal), R. G. Sutton (Invercargill Garrison), J. Strong (Christchurch Fire Brigade). Baritones: A. H. Martin (Blenheim Regimental), C. Tregurtha (Woolston Brass). Trombones: B. J. Aldridge (Woolston Brass), A. F. Brieseman (St. Kilda Municipal), J. Edgecombe (Kaikorai). J. B. Hanify (Wellington Fire Brigade), W. Thomas (Timaru Municipal). E Flat bass: V. Abrahams (Lower Hutt Municipal), E. A. Prout (Palmerston North City), D. C. Withell (Timaru Municipal). B Flat bass: D. B. Dewe (Mount Roskill Municipal). W. R. Moloney (Wellington Metro-Fire Brigade), D. H. Smith (Timaru Municipal). Percussion: J. Everitt (Masterton Municipal). D. Venables (Lower Hiltt Municipal). The band will leave New Zealand on June 1 and return in September. It will visit Britain first to take part in band contests and then go to Holland for the championship. The band will take part in three test selections and a marching event Twenty-five countries are sending bands to the contest.
