20-MILE RACE
Good Tinies Recorded In spite of the adverse conditions several runners bettered their best times for 20 miles when they competed in the 20-mile race from Christchurch to Rangiora on Tuesday evening. Organised by the Canterbury Road Runners Association the event has been a regular feature for several years of the annual Festivity Week programme held in Rangiora early in December The runners had to contend with cold rain throughout the race. One of the best efforts was that of R. Maddock, who won the event after working through the field from 22min behind the front marker. N C. Richards. Finishing six minutes ahead of the second man, J Stuart. Maddock also gained second fastest time with 2hr Imin 38sec. Starting 32min behind the limit, C. R. Ogle recorded the fastest time of Ihr 57min 47sec for third place Both Ogle and Maddock bettered the association’s A grade standard of 2hr 2min. Four other runners gained their B grade certificates by beating the standard of 2hr 26min. They are J. Stuart, G. T. Wilson, W. Terris, P. Watts. Olympic Hopes (NB. Japan hopes to win 63 medals, including 25 gold medals, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, under a training programme designed to build the nation’s athletic level, the Associated Press reported. The programme, prepared by the country’s leading sports and physical education instructors, was made known in a document released by the Olympic committee for training and strengthening of Japanese athletes.
