MAORI LAND DEVELOPMENT
Choice Before Owners (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Dec. 11. Officers of the Maori Affairs Department in the Waiariki land district are now in the midst of holding their annual meetings with the owners of the 36 development schemes in the district. If the schemes have reached the stage where they are free of debt and ready for settlement, owners have the choice of forming a corporation or allowing selected farmers to farm the land. On the 36 development schemes, eight of which are being developed by the Lands and Survey Department, there are 230,000 sheep and 29.000 cattle. The schemes range in size from the 7980-acre Tumunui scheme, nine miles south of Rotorua, to small 160-acre dairy farms, partly reverting to scrub.
