£l00 FROM THE SEA
Gift From D. Jones’ Locker (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 11. David Jones, Ltd., of Sydney, has lost a gamble with Davey Jones and his locker, and it is likely to cost the big Sydney store £lOO. Three years ago the Australian Antarctic Expedition tossed a sealed bottle into the Antarctic Ocean. A few days ago Mr Fred Flutey, of Bluff, found the bottle just north of Chalky Inlet on the south-west coast of the South Island. While he was looking for paua shells, the bottle rolled out of the surf at his feet. He opened it and found inside a typewritten note which said the finder of the bottle was entitled' to £lOO worth of canned goods at David Jones, Sydney. The offer was made by the store in 1958 and remains open to 1963. Mr Flutey has ' written to the Sydney store to let them know he has found the bottle. The place where he found it is known as Providence.
