DELAY FOR CABLES

Dispute Over Salary (N J! J* A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY. Dec. 7. A dispute over telegraphists' salary claims is delaying some cables to and from Australia. The assistant general manager of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (Mr Arthur Shepherd), in a written statement today, said the delays had not reached serious proportions. The secretary of the Professional Radio Employees’ Institute (Mr L. T. McGowen) said members of the institute employed by the commission were on a work-to-regulations “strike” and this was delaying letter telegram and greeting letter telegram rate messages to and from Australia for up to 24 hours. Mr McGowen said the technician®—about 350 in various branches throughout Australia—were working to the letter of regulations, instead of cutting the accepted corners. The commission had not granted salary increases the men had claimed, he said. Mr Shepherd in his statement, said the commission had granted some salary increases and changes of classification and had said there were prospects of further increases.
