COURSE IN RUSSIAN
Innovation By School (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 7. Russian would be taught in Rangitoto College next year the principal (Mr F. D. Tucker) said today at the college’s annual prize-giving ceremony. “We will be the first school in New Zealand to venture into this new field of language teaching,” he said. “This course is. I know, a departure from the traditional path of French and Latin, but Russia is a world power, and some knowledge of her language by young people must surely, in due time, contribute to a better understanding of world problems. “The Education Department has indicated that the subject can be presented for School Certificate. The University of New Zealand has also advised that Russian will be a subject for university entrance and university scholarship from next year.” Mr Tucker said the top third form academic class would have as their two foreign languages German and Russian. One of the staff had overseas experience in Russian and three others on the staff were studying the language.
