MINISTER IN ITALY

Talks On Trade (Special Crspdi. NJJ’.A.) LONDON. Dec. 2. “I believe there will be some opportunities far us to sell more meat in Italy,” said Mr 3. R. Marshall, the deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand. after talks with the Italian deputy Prime Minister (Senator A. Piccioni), the Italian Minister of Trade (Mr M. Mortinelli) and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr Russo), says a report from Rome. Mr Marshall, who also called on the British Ambassador, said the purpose of his talks was to inform the Italian Government of New Zealand's trading position, and of possible political and economic consequences for New Zealand in the event of the United Kingdom joining the E.E.C. Mr Marshall emphasised New Zealand’s needs to maintain, outlets for her meat, dairy produce, and other exports. It was encouraging to find that the Italian Ministers appreciated New Zealand's special . position in the United Kingdom market, and recognised that any substantial exclusion from it without comparable outlets would be disastrous, said Mr Marshall. ( Trade prospects between New Zealand and Italy, both in the light of the E.E.C., and generally, had been dis- : cussed, he said. ; Mr Mortinelli referred to Italy’s increasing standard ! of living, and said that need for imports of food would . increase with the growth of . her industry and her greater prosperity.
