“STILL NOT GUARANTEE”

Comment By Calwell (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 28. The Federal Opposition Leader (Mr Calwell) today described Mr Heath’s Common Market speech as the most unequivocal statement yet made by a British minister on the need to protect the interests of Commonwealth countries. “But it is still not a guarantee that its interests will be protected,” he said. Mr Calwell said: ‘ff hope Mr Heath means what he says and that he speaks with the full authority of the British Government. “It now seems as if a final decision will be arrived at, et least to principle, in negotiations regarding the position of Commonwealth countries before the Federal election on December 9 without the Australian voice being heard. “If It were the voice of a Labour Government that was putting the Australian case today it would be more strident. firm and insistent than the week supplicatory notice of the present Menzies Administration.”
