Estimate Of Costs Costs of servicing the port of Kaiapoi, reported in “The Press” on Wednesday, were estimates of the cost to the Kaiapoi Borough Council if it decided to run the services. The figures were not, as the article led readers to believe, the cost to the InterIsland Shipping Company which now runs the services, said Cr. K. Sinclair. “I have no idea what it costs the company,” be said Cr. Sinclair was reported as saying the salary of the harbourmaster was £l6OO. bis assistant’s salary £1200: the company’s launch would cost £6OOO so that £4OO a year plus possible maintenance would cover its life of 15 years: the company would get £125 in the collection of wharfages. “It is understandable that someone without local knowledge would not be aware of the difference," Cr. Sinclair said.
