DUMPING OF BUTTER
‘Future Policy Needed’ (N.Z. Preus Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. The recent butter-dumping i decision by the United King-| dom Government would | merely give the New Zealand; dairy industry breathing i space to formulate long-term solutions to its problems, Mr R. Woolerton, the chairman, said at • the quarterly meeting of the Dominion dairy section council of Federated Farmers. The industry should use the time to “thrash out” a policy which it could put forward at future international conferences, he said. While anti-dumping action was important to the industry, it must not lose sight that the crux of the solution to the problem was increased consumption of dairy produce on international markets generally. “No Easy Task” To bring this about would not be an easy task, but the industry must consider ways by which this aim could be achieved. Mr Woolerton said. The United Kingdom’s decision to restrain imports of butter into Britain was welcome. even although it was much overdue. Already the butter price had risen slightly. but it was too early yet to assess the full effects of the decision. “We shall hope that the offending countries will take steps during the six-month period ending March. 1962, to dispose of their large stocks on their home markets at prices which their own consumers can afford,” he said.
