BOTTLENECK IN SQUARE

A.A.C. Council Urges Action

Further action on the proposal to erect a new building on the bottleneck in Cathedral square should be taken as soon as possible, the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) decided at a meeting last evening.

Mr E. R. Casbolt said it was up to the city fathers to see there was adequate provision for the road at the bottleneck. “It seems to me there is a lack of civic pride and vision," said Mr F. W. Freeman.

"I feel the squeakiest wheel gets the most oil—let’s go again,’’ said Mr Casbolt. "I do not care how we do it—go and set fire to something —but do not just let us sit here. “It seems to me the council is leaving the matter to the governors of the bank: I think the boot should be on the other foot. “The council has not advised us so let’s keep on keeping on.’’ A motion was passed that the city council he advised that the association’s council noted with regret that no reply had been received to its letter, and that some step towards construction of a building had been made with the demolition of the bus shelter.

The council of the association repeated its urgent request for reconsideration of the matter, the motion said. A further motion was passed that representations be made to the governors of the Bank of New Zealand. After considerable discussion a further motion was passed that copies of the correspondence be sent to various other bodies in the city.
