CARS PER CAPITA
“N.Z. Second Only To U.S.”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. Probably because New Zealand had scattered communities and long and difficult lines of communication, its ears-to-population ratio was the second highest in the world, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight. He was speaking at a cocktail party given by directors of the Ford Motor Company of New Zealand to celebrate completion of its first 25 years of operation. Other Parliamentarians, as well as heads in governmental, diplomatic, professional and commercial fields attended the large gathering. With one car for every 4.5 persons New Zealand came second only to the United States In the number of cars per capita, said Mr Holyoake. "Henry Ford is the man who put the world on wheels. We don’t have to think back far for that, only a lifetime," he added. Good service all round had marked the company’s operations in New Zealand over 25 years. Congratulating the company on its anniversary, the Prime Minister proposed a toast to the organisation. A cable from Henrv Ford II was read by Mr B. F. Jamieson. managing director. The message expressed warm regards for the important milestone in Ford’s history and of its role as an industrial citizen pf New Zealand.
