Vital Statistics For N.Z.
The number of births in New Zealand in the nine months to September 30 ex.ceeded the number for any complete year up to 1954, and exceeded those for the same period last year by 2010, according to the vital statistics for the September quarter, released by the Government statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). There were 48,639 births in the nine-month period, and 16.524 live births in the September quarter. Of these. 14.398 were European and 2126 Maori. The births for the quarter showed an increase on previous years.
Still births in the quarter number 241. a drop on 1960’s figure of 242 and 243 in 1959. Deaths showed a slight increase at 6292 for the quarter The number of deaths in the nine-month period to September 30 at 16.614 was 1047 higher than the 15,567 recorded in 1960. The number of infant deaths for the quarter was 434, a slight increase on the 1960 figure of 412. There were 25 fewer marriages than in the September quarter last year. 3665 as against 3690. Marriages registered during the nine-month period, at 13.708 were 190 more than the 1960 figure at 13,518.
