I. Woodbury Unlucky

Five of the six members of the New Zealand amateur golf team today qualified to play in the Australian amateur golf championship at the Royal Melbourne course. I. Woodbury, of Wellington, with a 159, was one outside the qualifying aggregate. He was one of the last to hit off today and was unlucky to play in very bad weather conditions. The New Zealander* had three out of the first 18 of the 84 qualifier*. The 23-year-old Aucklander. R. Newdick, played immaculate golf today for a five-under par 68 and a total of 143 to lead the team. Other scores were:—R. R. Murray, 78, 72—148; F. Gordon. 74. 75—149; W. Godfrey, 72. 80—152; S. Jones, 83, 73—158; and I. Woodbury. 77. 82,-159. Tbs leading qualifier wa* the New South Wale* player. P. Billings, with a 139—a seven under par two round*. The New Zealand amateur champion. 8. Jone*, played today under the strain of knowing he needed at least a 73 to be guaranteed of qualifying. He had a six at the eighth and a five at the ninth to be out in 38, but came back in 35—finishing with 2,4, 4 to be two under tor the last three holes— tar a total of 73. The team’s manager, Mr J. Seouler. of Dunedin, said tonight he thought there wa* ev«ry chance one of the New Zealanders could take the title. “They are all playing very good golf and I think it depend* on the breaks, of course, but they could do very tWell," he said.
