STUDY OF ESTUARY
Interest Of University
The Auckland University’s Civil Engineering School has accepted an invitation by the CSiristchurch Drainage Board to make a model study of the Estuary of the Avon and Heathcote rivers.
The acceptance will come before the board next week, and the chairman (Mr F. R Price) thinks it will be accepted, subject to some reservations.
The professor of civil engineering in Auckland (Professor N. A. Mowbray) he* written to the board saying that the school would be pleased to undertake a mode) investigation with a view to determining the effect of a barrage at Moncks Bay. He proposed that Mr A. J Raudiovi, the senior lecturer in his department, Should visit Christchurch as soon as possible to discus* the problem.
Mr Price said that until Mr Raudkivi had visited Christchurch, and he was sure the board would invite him, it was not possible to say whether the university could carry out Sil the investigation® required. Earlier the board had found that an English research station was able to make model studies but unable to undertake the preparation of final designs from the interpretation of mode! studies The board had considered there was merit in having one organisation carry out the initial investigation, model studies, the final design and supervision of the erection of the ultimate structure.
The board had bad negotiation* with French consultant*, and rt was not yet known whether the consultants designing the engineering structure would be prepared to rely solely on the investigation and studies ot others.
