PAPER LIT UNDER BOY

Discovery By Mother (HZ. Preu Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 17. A Parnell housewife, Mrs Burt, of 16 Laurie avenue, returned home after a brief shopping expedition tonight to find that someone had placed a folded newspaper under the head of her sleeping two-year-old son and set it alight. A squad of detectives, led by Detective-Sergeant L. G. Schultz, was investigating the matter late tonight. The police dog Duke was also brought in in an eflfort to pick up the scent of any intruder. Mrs Burt said she and a daughter went up to the Parnell shops shortly after 8 p.m. Her son, Timothy, was asleep in his room with the door shut. When she returned she could smell smoke and noticed that Timothy’s door was slightly open. She found a folded newspaper smouldering under his head. His hair was slightly singed and sticking to the paper. He did not seem to have wakened and was unharmed.
