Department Reminded Of Trade Prerequisites

WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. A dairy industry spokesman tonight appealed to She Department of Industries and Commerce to say what Italian goods would be eligible for import licences if the industry could sell an additional £ 1 million of primary produce to that country. Hs request was prompted by an article published in “Export News,’’ the official organ of the department, in w hich it was said New Zealand’s exporters should Look to Ealy as a potential market for many of this country's products, including meat and dairy produce. "At a time when New Zealand’s primary industries are urgently seeking out every market we want to miss no chances,” said the spokesman. “However, we find that Italy, before buying more from us, wants to know what additional goods it can sell to New Zealand. The dairy industry fully realised the various implications of the multi-lateral trading system on which New Zealand worked, but f"»m earlier negotiations in Italy “it is perfectly clear
that if our trade is to be expanded there we will have to buy more from Italian sources,” said the spokesman. He believed the technical difficulties of Italian-New Zealand trade could be overcome, provided New Zealand could provide a good market tor Italian goods. "This can only be done if the department will indicate its import licensing for Italian goods, because the Italians, like some other countries that offer possibilities for dairy produce exports, are determined on having reciprocal trade.
