£5 FINE FOR “ROAD HOG”
Scathing Comment By Magistrate (From Out Oum Reporter) WESTPORT, Nov. 15. The Magistrate, Mr G. A. Nicholls, SM.. described Donald Thomas, aged 32. commission agent of Christchurch. as a “road hog, and one who had no care for other road users.” when he fined him £5 for driving without consideration for other traffic on the Seddon-! ville-Karamea highway on I July 8. He cancelled his I licence for four months, and! said the term would havej been longer but for his occupation, in which a car was; necessary for Thomas’s South Island run. Defendant was ordered to pay £l3 witnesses’ expenses and also Court costs. Evidence was given by William J. Power, a farmer, of Karamea, that Thomas wfeen travelling at a fast speed had hit his car when it was parked well over on the left hand side of the road on the Karamea end of the bridge on the turn to Granite Creek. He said that after the accident he had been abused by Thomas. The defendant denied speeding and said that he felt that he had a clearance.
