Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Wellesley, the seventh Duke of Wellington—the dukedom was created in 1814 will arrive in Christchurch early in January during a tour of New Zealand. Born in 1885, the third son of the fourth duke, he succeeded to the title in 1943 on the death of his nephew who was killed in action at Salerno, Italy. He is also Marques Douro, Marquess and Earl of Wellington, Somerset; Viscount Wellington, of Talavera, and of Wellington; Baron Douro. of Wellesley, Somerset (all in the United Kingdom); Earl of Mornington, Viscount Wellington, at Dangan Castle, Baron of Mornington (Ireland* Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo and a Grandee of the First Class in Spain; Count of Vimeiro, Marquess of riorres Vedras. and Duke of Victoria (in Portugal); Prince of Waterloo in the • Netherlands. ' The duke entered the diplomatic service in 1908. and served as diplomatic secretary in Petrograd (Leningrad), Constantinople and Rome before he retired in 1919. As a lieutenant-colonel m the Grenadier Guards, he served in World War II with the British Expeditionary Force in 1939-40, and later with the Middle East Forces and the Central Mediterranean Forces. He has been Chancellor of the University of Southampton since 1951 and Governor of the Isle of Wight since 195(1 In 1951 he was created a Knight of the Garter. . The Duke was lord lieutenant of the County of London from 1944 to 1949 and was lord lieutenant of Hampshire from 1949 to 1960. For seven years he was a trustee of the National Gallery. As well as being a diplomat and a soldier, the Duke is also an author, and has published several works on his famous ancestor. They are "The Iconography of the First Duke of Wellington." and “The Conversations of the First Duke of Wellington with George William Shad “ He also edited with Francis Bamford two volumes of the “Journal of Mrs Arbuthnot, 1820-1832.” The Duke’s heir is the Marquess Douro. who commands the 22nd Armoured Brigade. He commanded the Royal Horse Guards from 1954 to 1958.
