PRINCESS IN TOKYO

Not Warned To Remove Shoes (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO. November 15. Princess Alexandra kept her shoes on in a “shoes-off” public place in Tokyo today, but nobody minded. She was visiting a Japanese hospital, where the Japanese-custom of removing footwear at the entrance to the house was observed. She had not been briefed beforehand and marched in wearing her shoes while everyone else was taking theirs off. Princess Alexandra talked with the mothers through interpreters and played with the babies. She brought several presents and helped unwrap them for the mothers and their babies. Across the road from the hospital, the normal activities of a school came to a halt as teachers and pupils waved and shouted from the windows. The warmth of Japan’s reception of the Royal visitor continued today.. Taxi driv--ers stopped and smiled when police stopped traffic for the Princess and people smiled and waved as she passed clogged and dusty streets.
