THE LANDS DEPARTMENT’S AERIAL TOPDRESSING operations have almost doubled in the last two years. This photograph shows a Fletcher U-24 aircraft, specially designed for New Zealand conditions, helping to bring in new land on the high pumice plateau of the central North Island. Last year, the Lands Department top-dressed about 400,000 acres with 65,000 tons of lime, fertilisers, and trace elements, and each year more than 300,0001 b of grass seed is sown from the air. The department’s share of the country’s topdressing work is one-tenth of the total.
