CRICKET MotzBowls Well To Take Eight Wickets For 37

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) KRUGERSDORP (Transvaal), November 15. The New Zealand fast bowler, R. Motz, took eight wickets for 37 runs in helping to dismiss Transvaal Country Districts for 115 when the New Zealand team began a two-day match at Krugersdorp today. By the close of play the New Zealanders had replied with 325 for six wickets, J. Guy scoring 122, including 13 fours and a six, in 130 minutes. New Zealand’s 325 runs were made in only 190 minutes. Guy and J. Sparling shared an opening stand of 170 runs in 115 minutes—the highest partnership for any wicket on the tour so far. Sparling made 61.

The fine swing bowling of Motz, who finished with eight, wickets for 37 in 16.1 overs, wrought havoc among the local batsmen who were dismissed for 115. Motz, using the breeze on a cold, overcast day, captured the last six wickets for 11 runs in 8.1 overs. Both Guy and Sparling, whose innings lasted the duration of the stand, played beautiful strokes which thoroughly delighted a crowd of more than 600 who watched. Guy scored most of his runs off the back foot, with some hard drives through the covers and well-judged hooks. while Sparling’s innings included seven boundaries, with excellent straight drives. When these two were out, District quickly captured the wickets of Barton, McGregor, and Harris, all trying to force the pace. The New Zealanders, 194 for one at one stage, then found themselves with five wickets down and only 17 runs added to the total. However, Dick, who made a hard-hit unbeaten 74, and Chapple, captaining the side in the absence of Reid, added 50 in 17 minutes for the sixth wicket. In the last 20 minutes, Dick and Yuile increased the total by a further 40 runs.

Ait the close of play, Dick had been at the crease 54 minutes and hit 11 fours in an innings which was full of good strokes all round the wicket, against a battered attack.

Chapple also batted well for his 35, which included a six and five fours.

Motz made the ball swing both ways and bowled intelligently to his field, with Yuille at short mid-on taking four fine catches-—three of them off Short-pitched balls which Motz’s victims tried to hood, but mistimed. Cameron was steady and gained movement, but he was never as devastating as his colleague. Cameron had a chance dropped off his bowling by Barton in the slips—the only fault in some fine fielding—when the ta.ilenders were in, while Alabaster, who made the ball turn a little, was accurate. He bowled to a packed field on

the off, and varied his deliveries occasionally with well-concealed googlies. Harris was also accurate in a spell of six overs, but Vorster (who only left school last year) and Levy could not be induced to play a false stroke. The first eight overs they faced from Harris and Alabaster were maidens. Apart from Vorster and Levy, who put on S 3 in 67

minutes for the fifth wicket, Districts’ batting offered little resistance against the New Zealand attack. The match ends tomorrow. Scores. TRANSVAAL COUNTRY DISTRICTS First Innings P.
