FIRES NEAR AMBERLEY

Gorse And Cars Burnt

Fires which burnt gome and two old cars were attended by members of the Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade on Tuesday. The first fire, to which the brigade was called about 11 a.m. was on the property of Mr C. B. Satterthwaite, near Mount Grey, and burnt about 30 acres of gorse. The brigade was returning to Amberley about 2 p.m. when it was called by radio-telephone to the property of Mr P. L McMillan. Saltwater creek, about 10 miles from Amberley. This burnt about 20 yards ot gorse hedge and two old cars. The chief officer of the brigade <Mr I. J. McLean' said that the fire at Mount Grey would have burnt the house had it been unchecked. About 30 men, including neighbouring farmers, fought the fire One of the fire appliances had to be used in carrying water from a creek. The fire at Saltwater creek started in a hedge, Mr McLean believes. In its early stages it could have endangered the house but the strong north-west wind directed it away. The fire was in Its last stages when the brigade arrived. Mr W. Hughey, of Cheviot, assisted Mr and Mrs McMillan in carrying water to the fire. In a letter to "The Press" Mr and Mrs McMillan thank the brigade and the persons who assisted them.
