FIRE IN GAS MAINS
Auckland Road Reopened
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 16. A quarter-mile stretch of new North road near the Molint Albert War Memorial Hall was reopened to traffic at 2.15 p.m. today while a gas-fed fire still burned in mains under the street. The road was cordoned off on Wednesday night after a series of underground explosions. which blew slabs of concrete and sealing into the air. The area still resembled a geothermal "hotspot” tonight. Smoke drifted from a two-foot-wide crater and the road surface was warm underfoot. The intersection around the spot is still roped off. Mr G. R. Jackson, the Mount Albert Borough supervisor, said it was only a matter of time before the fire burnt itself out. The flow of gas had been stopped and the blaze was feeding on saturated earth. The plugging of the gas mains did not affect the supply to adjoining residents and business. Workmen will start repairs as soon as the road cools.
