SIDE CHANNEL COVERINGS

Investigations In City Streets

Investigations are being made by the City Council to see if sections of Gloucester street and Victoria street are suitable for the covering of side channels. The work committee has provision in the estimates for £2OOO to provide for some covering of dished side channels or their replacement by flat channels. In the central area many dished channels require replacement or extensive repairs, and the council's policy is to give preference to that area before the suburban shopping areas. One of the reasons is that a systematic replacement will help effective conversion of central cleansing from a manual to a mechanical system. In Hereford street, between Manchester street and Oxford terrace, the southern side channel requires general replacement, although the northern does not. It seems that £2OOO would not do much more than half the southern channel. In Gloucester street, between Manchester street and the terrace, much of the side channel is already covered and the rest can be partiallv covered, partially replaced by flat channel and partially replaced by a pipe under a flat channel. The position in Victoria street is complicated by future widening. On the west side between Healey avenue and Dorset street defective channels have been replaced and the area generally improved, and it is probable that the work will continue down to Salisbury street.
