GOLF Godfrey Leads N.Z. Team In Australian Singles Title
MELBOURNE, Nov. 16. The youngest of the visiting New Zealand golfers, W. J. Godfrey, returned a 72 to lead his team-mates in the first qualifying round of the Australian amateur golf championship at the Royal Melbourne course today. The other New Zealanders’ scores were:—F. T. Gordon 74, R. R. Newdick 75, R. C. Murray 76, I. D. Woodbury 77, S. G. Jones 83. The young Sydney golfer.
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) K. Donohoe, led today with an amazing 68. He three-put-ted three times in a 36 out, but came home in 32. One behind him was W. Higgins, on 69. Then came the New South Wales player, P. Billings, on 70, and the Victorian, T. Crow, on 71. Another Victorian, R. O’Shea, shared fourth place on 72 with Godfrey. Of the New Zealanders, Gordon was very good on the greens, and one-putted eight
holes. However, his luck ran out on the eighteenth, when he four-putted. Jones collapsed with an 83. and needs a 73 or better tomorrow to qualify for the final.
Match Series For Charles (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 16. A series of challenge matches will be played by the New Zealand professional golfer, R. J. Charles, of Christchurch, and the runnerup for the amateur championship, R. R. Newdick, of North Shore. The matches will be played at Auckland provincial centres between Christmas and New Year. Charles also will play one exhibition match against the man he beat in the professional championship, J. A. Paterson, and another against the prominent Rotorua professional, E. Fennell. All the matches are being sponsored.
