LIMITED USE OF FREEZING WORKS

Position In N.Z. Criticised

With the very large amount of money involved in a freezing works, it seemed surprising to many persons that they were used for such a short period each year, said Mr C. Hilgendorf, a member of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. He was speaking at the Mid-Canterbury export lamb competition, held yesterday at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s Fairfield freezing works. In no other country in the world, but New Zealand, would this be tolerated, he said. The works here were used for eight hours a day, five days a week, seven months a year, and yet there was £4,000,000 or £5.000,000 tied up in each of them. “AU farmers should look very carefully at such enormous sums of money being used for such short hours. It is a very serious question.” He considered that it was political and social difficulties which kept the freezing works on such short time. It had been 30 years since a new freezing works had been built, and he considered the new one opened recently in Southland was quite a good thing.
