NO RAIN IN CITY

Few Points In South

The rain predicted for yesterday failed to materialise about Christchurch, and in most parts of Canterbury the little that fell was insufficient to relieve the very dry conditions. Over a wide area the fall was only a few points. The sky generally cleared about midday, and the southerly change gave way to nor’-west conditions. Another southerly change was expected, the chief observer at the Weather Office at Harewood (Mr A. K Brown) said yesterday. Most rain fell at Arthurs Pass, where 3.23 in was registered during the 24 hours up to 9 a m. yesterday. It continued to rain there until about 4 p.m. and remained overcast with a fairly strong nor’-west wind. Further rain was threatening last evening. In the south, at Pleasant Point and Timaru, southerly conditions persisted throughout the day but with only intermittent drizzle. At Pleasant Point about a quarter of an inch fell early yesterday morning and eased off to drizzle before 10 a.m Timaru received a little rain between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Temperatures remained cool and the sky overcast but for the rest of the day the city had only patches of light drizzle. Up to 9 a.m. yesterday 12 points of rain fell at Fairlie and Hororata and seven points were recorded at Lake Coleridge. In northern areas the rain was less. Apart from a few syots about 9 a.m. no rain fell at Culverden and all cloud was swept away by a strong nor’-west wind about midday. At Oxford it began drizzling about 5 a.m. and continued through the morning with occasional showers. About 15 points fell before cloud cleared about midday when the weather became fine and sunny. Less than a point of rain fell at Waipara about 7 a.m. though cloud remained till around noon. A strong nor’west wind blew early in the afternoon but moderated after about two hours.
