Sportsman’s Notebook SCHOOLBOY WRESTLING ON SATURDAY

The 1961 Canterbury schoolboy amateur wrestling championships will be held in the Toe H Linwood Boys' Club rooms on Saturday. These championships are open to all schoolboys aged 12 years and upwards. The holding of these championships by the Canterbury Wrestling Association is intended to promote interest in amateur wrestling in the schools. Great interest has always been taken in this annual tourney. Trophies are awarded to the winners of each class. In addition there will be at stake the R. E. Booker Cup tor the most scientific exhibition in the open class and the R. E. Hall Cup for the most scientific exhibition by a primary schoolboy. Competition among schools will be for the A. P. Craig Shield. Awarded to the school gaining the most points, this trophy is at present held by Christchurch Technical College.

Water Polo The first representative water polo matches of the season in Christchurch will be held on December 2. This will be a triangular tournament, with teams from Otago, Wellington and Canterbury competing. Last Saturday’s match with Otago in Dunedin had to be cancelled at the last moment as no transport was available for the team over the long holiday week-end. This was to have been the first of the home-and-away series for the Miller Cup.

* * * Tennis Entries Entries for this year’s New Zealand lawn tennis championships, which will be held in Christchurch at Wilding Park, will close with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association on Saturday, December 2. All entries must be made through local associations. The draw for all events will be made in Wellington on December 7. * ¥ ¥ Fijians’ Success

The former Fijian Rugby internationals, J. Levula and O. Dawai, made their debut in English Rugby League by scoring all their side’s 13 points for Rochdale Hornets reserve team against Liverpool City. Levula scored a try and kicked tour goals and Dawai kicked one goal. A wing three-quarters, Levula toured New Zealand with Fijian Rugby Sides in 1951 and 1957 and Dawai was captain of the 1957 team. ¥ ¥ ¥ Not Available The four Auckland athletes who have been invited to run in Christchurch on December 23 have all advised the Canterbury Athletic Centre that they will not be available on that day. They are M. G. Halberg, A. B. Magee. D. S. Norris and Miss D. Porter, all national champions. The four will be competing in the meeting at Waimate on Boxing Day, but will be unable to fit in the meeting at Christchurch.

¥ ¥ ¥ Tennis Form New Zealand’s thirdranked tennis player, R. G. Clarke, beat the fifthranked R. N. Hawkes. 6-3. 7-5 in a ranking match in Wellington last week-end. B.oth Clarke and Hawkes made tours overseas last year and showed improvement when they returned. Clarke served well and excelled at the net. In another match J. B. Souter was in grand form when he beat B. Taylor without the loss of a game.
