Authority Refuses Licence
An application to amend a goods service licence to allow the carrying of 44-gallon drums from, a large part of the South Island, with ex--emptibn from the railways restriction- was refused in a reserved judgment issued by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood), as it was not considered necessary or desirable in the public interest. The application was made by E. H. Boyce, of 38 Mersey street, Christchurch. For some years tire licensee had bought 44-gallon drums from Blenheim to Gore and at Greymouth and sold them to freezing works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Belfast, for. tallow containers. Said Mr Haywood.
Changing circumstances had resulted in th® licensee gaining insufficient profit to meet the loss caused by the rejection of unsuitable drums by the works, and Mr Boyce had applied for permission to use a truck instead of railway transport so th® drums could be inspected before carting to the works, Mr Haywood said. “If the drums are sufficiently in demand they will not fail to reach the freezing ■works or another market whether this application is granted or not," Mr Haywood said. Though he wes sympathetic towards the applicant, the broad view of the national economy did not support the proposal to run a heavy trade vehicle throughout a large part of the South Island to carry empty drums, as an adequate service was given by the railways, said Mr Haywood.
