MR H. S. RITCHIE 85 TODAY
Work As Printer’s Apprentice
Mr H. S. Ritchie, of 18 Wedton road, Papanui, who is 85 today, is one of the few meo in Christchurch who has driven a horse to provide power for machinery. While an aniprentice printer in the old Christchurch firm of Brown and Gates, he rode the horse which turned the press which printed the old sporting paper, the “New Zealand Referee.” He fetched the horse every morning from Lukey’s Stables and attended it while it went round and round a small patch of green in Cashel street, near the Queen’s (now MicKendry’s) Hotel. The horse was harnessed to machinery which worked the pre*. When the "Referee” was taken over by “The Press,” Mr Ritchie did not carry on as a printer, his later jobs including work with a dairy and business on his own account as a hairdresser.
He was a footballer and cyclist in bis younger days, appearing tor the Merivale Rugby Football Club and the Christchurch Cycling Club. He Still plays snooker, billiards, and bowls, and rides his bicycle.
Mrs Ritchie is still living, and last year they celebrated their golden wedding.
