RANKING TOURNEY

Second Round Matches

The second round of matches in the first men’s and women’s ranking tournaments being held by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association were played at Wilding Park last evening. Supplementary matches were also held for those who were eliminated in the first rounds last week.

J. W. Duggan, B. R. Crawford and A. Brooks won their matches in the men’s second round. G. Moss, who was to have played in the tournament this week, was not available because of illness. Brooks’s win was especially meritorious for he beat W. Thom, ranked third last season, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. In the women’s tournament. Miss J. Davidson, Mrs D. McKinnel. Mrs E. Campbell, and Mrs P. Leopold won their matches. .Mrs Campbell won her match from Mrs C. Pearce by default because Mrs Pearce was unable to travel in from the country. Results:— MEN Rankins Tournament Second Round.—J., w. Duggan beat T. Hemeiss, 6-2. 6-1; B. R. Crawford beat L. Watkins, 7-5, 6-4: A. Brooks beat W. Thorn, 7-3 3-6 6-3.

Supplementary Matches First Round.—B. W. Crofts beat G. Fond. 4-6. 6-0. 6-1; B. J. Shirlaw beat L. Sandford. 6-1. 6-4; M. C. Healey beat V. Price, 6-0, 6-3.

WOMEN Ranking Tournament Second Round.—Miss J Davidson beat Miss J. MoJUswi. 6-1. 6-0; Mrs D. McKlnnel beat Miss K. Williams, 9-7. 3-6 6-3; Mrs E. Campbell beat Mis C. Pearce, by default; Mrs P Leopold beet Miss D. Corich 6-1. 6-0.

Supplementary Matches Ftett Round—Miss H. Bllck boat Mrs P. Bwtwood, 6-4. 7-5; Mire J. McKatai beat Miss J. Hate* 6-4. 6-0; Miss J. Cusdta and Mrs L Buxton, byes. Woolf Unavailable For Tour (NJ!. Prea Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 14. B. E. Woolf, who was a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup lawn tennis teams in 1959 and 1960, will not be available for the proposed four-man tour next year.

Woolf will be married early in May. J. H. Lockington, the only other Auckland man in the nine players who have been requested to state whether they are available, is so far indefinite.
