Crookenden To Play Laver

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, November 14. The young New Zealand Davis Cup player, I. Crookenden. will play the Wimbledon champion, R. Laver, in the third round of the New South Wales singles championship tomorrow. Crookenden today qualified to meet Laver by beating the South Australian, A. Lane, 6-2, 7-9, 6-4, in a close match. Lane, who had been overseas for the last Iff months, looked like winning, but Crookenden fought back well to save the second set and then win the third impressively. Overseas tennis players showed greatly improved form in the second round of the championships today at the White City courts, when five were successful. The most impressive winner was B. Jovanovic, of Jugoslavia, who beat the veteran. M. Anderson, 6-0. 6-0. Anderson has been playing competition tennis for more than 20 years and could not remember when he failed to take a single game previously. Crookenden and his partner, J. Stephens, a young Victorian left-hander, gave Laver and J.. Shepherd a tough doubles match in the second round. Laver and Shepherd were in trouble in the first set when Shepherd’s service was broken for 3-5. The two Queenslanders then broke Stephens’s service for 4-5 and Laver held service to 5-5. Next service to be broken was Crookendien’s in the twenty-third game and Shepherd then served the winning game for 13-11. Stephens’s service was the only one broken in the second set, which Laver and Shepherd took. 6-4.
