VANDALISM IN SQUARE

Damage To Water Sprinkler

Vandals have removed essential parts of an expensive water-sprinkler system on the lawn around the Christchurch War Memorial in Cathedral square, says Mr C. H Clemens, custodian of the Christchurch War Memorial, in a letter to "The Press.” “Last year the area surrounding the memorial was cultivated and new grass sown,” says Mr Clemens. “An expensive sprinkler system was installed so that the grass might always be kept in good condition. It was not long, however, before several of the sprinkler heads had either been damaged or removed, with the result that the complete watering system could not be used. "These sprinklers are manufactured overseas and it was only after a long delay that replacements were obtained. These were fitted last Thursday and only yesterday I found that essential parts from two more sprinklers -had been removed, which is not easily done. “It is difficult to understand the mentality and lack of civic pride in any person who would do such wanton damage. I hope those responsible will see thia letter. as the matter has been reported to the authorities and the necessary action will be taken against any person found to be causing similar damage in the future.

"It is a disgrace to think that members of the public would behave In such a manner. and I appeal to all citizens to treat this area with the honour and respect that it deserves.”
