Cricket BOMBAY TEST

India Bats Slowly

(NJZ. Pres* Atm.—Copyright) BOMBAY. Nov. 14. India continued its chase after England’s big first innings score of 500 for eight by taking its overnight score of 42 for none to 173 for three at tea today. . The first hour brought only 33 runs off 17 overs and soon afterwards England gained its first success.

The Indian captain, N. Contractor, after scoring 19 in 135 minutes, played on a ball from D. A. Allen. Sections of the 45,000 crowd booed him as he left the field. M. L. Jaisimha, who retired hurt on Sunday, then resumed his innings. Only 57 runs were scored before lunch. The scoring spurted after lunch. Jaisimha cut two fours off Allen, and V. L. Manjrekar collected a five, with four overthrows, Manjrekar was out soon afterwards, pulling a long hop from R. W. Barber straight to G. A. R. Lock at mid-wicket His 88 took exactly three hours. The blue-turbanned lefthander, Milkha Singh, next man in, showed aggressive intent often running down the pitch to the spinners. Jaisimha continued his solid defence, occasionally lashing out while Milkha hit firmly, but mostly to fieldsmen.

Milkha was till on two after 35 minutes. Then, losing his patience, skied a ball from the persistent Allen to deep mid-off and departed at 140 for three.
