CLAIM BY WIDOW

Sequel To Sea Hawk Disaster

(N2. Press Association) GISBORNE, November 14. Judge Dalglish reserved his decision in the Compensation Court tonight on a claim by Mrs Synnove Madsen, now living in Norway, the widow of Karl Madsen, a share fisherman presumed drowned to the disappearance of the fishing vessel Sea Hawk near Portland Island on the night of April 13-14, 1960. The widow sought unspecified compensation from East Coast Fisheries, Ltd., the vessel’s owners.

The 40-foot Sea Hawk was on her way back to Gisborne from Napier after a fcurmonth refit. Madsen was accompanied by Reginald Dudley, another share fisherman, who was skipper. The main point at issue was whether Madsen was employed under a contract of service and whether, as a share fisherman, he was a worker under the Workers’ Compensation Act. Defence evidence was given by Mr L. R. Alien, a director of the company, and Mr K. H Lynch, secretary of the company.
