LOYALTY IN U.S.
‘Mock Patriots Divide People 9
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) HOUSTON (Texas), Nov. 13. Americans who question the loyalty of every dissenter are “dividing the people with false issues of mock patriotism,” according to Mr Edward R. Mur-row, director of the United States Information Agency. He said that some groups in She United States used the excuse of anti-communism to spy upon their neighbours, to force politics into the armed services and to “impose upon the land stifling uniformity falsely labelled as loyalty.” The U.S.IA.. chief did not mention any particular organisations but he referred to “ those who would preach a now belief in politics . . . under the banner of patriotism.”
In remarks prepared for delivery before the Public Relations Society of America, he said: “The threat to this country from communism can and will be met. For that threat which is internal, there is an agency to attend the task. We serve neither its cause nor our own by charging every dissenter with debasement of his loyalty. “For that threat which te external, as it is In, Laos and Vietnam, in Berlin and in big bombs, we poorly serve the cause of free men everywhere by dividing the people with false issues of mock patriotism.”
