Protection Sought

(N.ZPA.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 11. Government protection would be sought against imports of New Zealand butter, retailing at 2s 6d per lb. the secretary of the Victorian Dairy Farmers’ Association (Mr K. W. Thome) said yesterday. Mr Thome was commenting on a statement from Auckland that dairy farmers there were preparing to enter the Australian market. Australian chain stores were ready to sell their butter, the New Zealanders claimed. Mr Thorne said the proposal had been discussed by Australian dairymen previously. “There is an understanding between the local industry and the Government that if New Zealand intended to export butter here the Government would put up a tariff barrier or restrict imports, ’* Mr Thorne said.
