WELFARE STATE

Criticism At Drama Talks (NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. 'The welfare State has nearly ruined us and it’s time we learnt to stand on our own feet.” said Mr D. S. Campbell, of the National Arts Advisory Council, at the annual conference of the New Zealand branch of the British Drama League in Wellington this week-end. He said this after some members suggested that the council might help provide capital equipment for drama clubs. including lighting apparatus which was a “crying need throughout the country.” and also assist societies to buy their own premises. The president (Mr F. R. Bums) had earlier asked for and received critical appraisal from delegates of the council’s disbursements of financial aid to the arts in New Zealand.
