Draw Seems Likely In Match Against Natal
(Special Correspondent NJZJ*-A.) DURBAN, November 11. With one day left, the match between New Zealand and Natal appears to be heading towards a draw, rain having interrupted play for 100 minutes after lunch today. When McLean and Dumbrill successfully appealed against the light 25 minutes before the scheduled dose, Natal was 41 for two wickets in its second innings, which, with a first-innings lead of 27, placed them 68 ahead. Features of today’s play were the devastating bowling of Adcock, the fine swing bowling of Cole, the splendid fighting half-century by the New Zealand captain, Reid, and resolute batting by the New Zealand tail-enders, Motz, Bartlett and Ward. All this contributed to an interesting day’s play for the crowd of 2655.
The New Zealanders, 95 for one wicket when the match resumed this morning, tottered to 117 for six before recovering to be all out for 715. They saw Adcock at his best today, as he caused havoc to an Innings that promised so much. Adcock was fast and accurate, wasting very few deliveries, and with able support from the dangerous seam -bowling of Cole, had the early New Zealand batting completely “tied up." Adcock and Cole ruined New Zealand’s hopes of a good start today, and between them took the first five wickets—which fell for only 18 rune. Both Guy and Barton looked sound until their departure. Barton was first to go when he moved forward and was leg before wicket after scoring 32. Guy, who headed New Zealand’s grand recovery yesterday, played back to Adcock and had his middle and leg stumps knocked back. He had batted patiently for 60 in a stay of 187 minutes, and had hit six boundaries. McGregor showed several good-looking strokes, but was bowled playing across a ball from Adcock. Both Dick and Chapple went quickly. It was a mod disappointing first-class debut for Dick. He came in at a time when Adcock and Cole were right on top, and was out almost immediately, caught behind the wicket, off Cole. Chapple never looked happy against the fast bowlers. He turned Cole for four through slips, but later Cole struck his stumps when he lifted his head while playing forward. It was left to the captain. Reid, and the bottom-order batsmen to repair the innings. Reid played Adcock with confidence, and was contend to score singles all round the wicket off him. When the medium - pace bowler, Dumbrill, and the leg-spinner, Parsons, came on, Reid opened up, and finished with 52 in 100 minutes, with two sixes and four fours. Motz, who scored 24. played his best innings of the tour, ard showed power in bis on drives and shots through the covers. The New Zealanders made a great start when they early captured the wickets of both Natal’s openers Versfeld and Heath, who came in in place of Varnals, who suffered a badly-bruised hand while batting yesterday. This was through the fine pace bowling of Bartlett and Motz. However, when play
was brought to a premature close, the Natal captain, McLean, and Dumbrill were beginning to get on top. Bartlett was fast and accurate today, but was twice no-balled in four overs. Ward had to leave the field when play resumed after the rain because of an injured thumb, suffered when taking a fast ball from Bartlett. Scores:— NATAL First Innings D. Ward Out With Injured Thumb (Special Crspdt N.Z.P.A.) DURBAN, Nov. 11. The New Zealand wicketkeeper, J. Ward, badly dislocated his left thumb during Natal’s second innings here today. Ward suffered the injury when he took a fast ball from Bartlett He left the field, and had the thumb put back in place, but continued to suffer great pain, and later was taken to hospital for an X-ray. This showed that Ward had chipped a bone in the thumb, which will be in plaster for three weeks. Ward will not bat again in the present match.
