Hadlees’ Great Day Christchurch’s most successful cricket family this season must be the Hadlees. The former New Zealand captain, W. A. Hadlee, scored a century for the Old Boys senior team on Saturday, making 58 the previous week. His son, Barry, who scored a century in the first match, was out for 98 yesterday. The second son, Martin, scored 88 for the Christchurch Boys’ High School third eleven. The only other son playing on Saturday, Dale, scored only 12 for the school’s under 14 first team, but compensated by taking five cheap wickets. Sugar Price Reduced rates in the price of raw sugar mean a reduction in retail price of about a farthing per lb of sugar. Shoppers w-ill benefit only if they buy sugar in lots larger than 21b. Two pound tins of golden syrup will sell at Is 4Jd instead of Is sd. Whisked A crowd of about 3000 excited teen-agers waited at Whenuapai Airport last night to greet the 21-year-old British rock ’n* roll singer, Cliff Richard, and his party of 12 entertainers. But only a few hundred of them caught a glimpse of the singer as he was whisked away by police through a side door.— ( P.A.) Tug Atlas Departs The tug Atlas, with the two frigates Taupo and Tutira in tow, left Whangaroa harbour about 8 p.m. on Saturday on the way to Hong Kong. The ships were forced to put into Whangaroa for repairs to the tug when the towline fouled the seabed five miles north of Cape Reinga.—(P.A.) Hercules Expected The first United States Navy Hercules to return from tha Antarctic since the operational season began there a little more than a month ago is due back at Harewood this morning. The Hercules will undergo a routine maintenance inspection by engineers of the VX6 Squadron. It is expected that the other three Hercules at present at McMurdq, Sound will also return within the next few weeks for maintenance checks.
MR J. S. WHITTA, who has been appointed sec-retary-treasurer in the Niue Island Administration. He will also act as deputy Resident Commissioner of Niue and Commissioner of the High Court. Mr Whitta was born in Christchurch in 1921 and was educated at Christchurch West High School. He served in the Royal New Zealand Navy during the Second World War. From 1953 to 1959 he was stationed on Niue Island as treasurer and collector of Customs.
