8000 ATTEND PROCESSION

Feast Of Christ The King

Nearly 5000 persons marched in the annual procession to celebrate the feast of Christ the King, held yesterday afternoon through the grounds of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Bahbadoes street and Sacred Heart College and Xavier College. Another 3000 watched the procession. The procession was the culmination of 40 hours’ devotion at the cathedral. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) carried the Blessed Sacrament in the pro. cession to a specially constructed altar on the southern side of the cathedral, where he gave Benediction.

The deacon was the Rev. Father C. R. Crocker, S.M., parish priest of St. Mary’s, the sub-deacon was the Rev. Father G. McGinty, S.J., rector of the Holy Name Seminary, and the master of ceremonies was the Rev. Father B. Meeking of the Cathedral.

During the procession prayers for peace were said and hymns were sung. A special Mass for peace was celebrated in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 8 a.m. yesterday. The Rev. Father Agathangelus, 0.F.M., preached at the Mass at 11 a.m.
