UNIVERSITY SERVICE

Rev. F. P. Goddard Bidden Farewell

The final church service of 1961 for the University of Canterbury was held in the Christ’s College Chapel yesterday morning. The service was conducted by the university chaplain (the Rev. F. P. Goddard) who will leave today for Auckland and Britain. The collection at the service was dedicated towards providing a youth centre in Leopoldville. The first lesson was read by Mr B. Ullrich, the president-elect of the Students' Association, and the second lesson by the Vice. Chancellor (Dt. L. L. Pownall). After Mr Goddard’s last sermon as university chaplain the congregation was led in prayer by the chairman of the Canterbury Chaplaincy Committee (the Rev. L. N. Rawlings). Mr and Mrs Goddard were bidden farewell after the service, in the common room of the Students’ Union building. Speeches were made by Dr. Pownall, on behalf of the University Council, Mr J. Mather, for the Student Christian Movement, Mr Ullrich, on behalf of the Students’ Association, and the Rev. Rawlings, on behalf of his committee. Presentations were made by the last three speakers. Mr Goddard will become vicar ,of Abbots Langley, in Hertfordshire, early next year.
