ATHLETICS Miss Chamberlain Breaks Own Half-mile Record

The New Zealand representative Miss Marise Chamberlain probably has the distinction of being the first athlete to break a New Zealand record this season. In what amounted to a solo run, Miss Chamberlain returned 2min 11.4 sec for the women’s A grade half-mile at the inter-club meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday to improve on her own national record of 2min 12.8 sec, which has stood since February 13, 1960.

Only two athletes took the mark and Miss Chamberlain strode through the distance in supreme isolation and at the finish held a winning margin of 42sec. Although Miss Chamberlain has run comparable times, none have been achieved in such confident fashion without the benefit of close competition or pacemaking provided by male athletes. Miss Chamberlain has obviously benefited from the strength-building programme she undertook during the winter for, despite the comparatively fast first quartermile of a little outside 63sec, she showed none of the lassitude in the second lap that has been evident in previous runs. Although sprints are now a secondary consideration for Miss Chamberlain, she was able to win both the 75 yards and the 220 yards also. Her margin in the 75 yards was slender, however, for the second competitor. Miss K. Mackenzie (Toe H). shared the same time, 9.lsec, as Miss Chamberlain. Although Saturday was but the third meeting of the season there were several outstanding performances, particularly amongst the younger age groups. Some sections of the under-age groups have been given additional incentive by the setting of standards, as a prelude to the establishment of records. Three competitors in the men's under 17 section bettered the standards and applications have been made for the recognition of their performances as the first records. In the shot put, T. Freeman (High Schools) heaved the 81b 13oz weight 52ft sfin, an improvement of more than four feet on the standard distance. Freeman had the satisfaction, also, of beating more mature athletes in the junior shot put in which he hurled the 121 b weight 44ft 44in. Another High School’s member, B. Sheard. eclipsed the 440 yards standard of 53sec with a time of 52.75ec and in the 100 yards R. Robinson (Christ’s College) equalled the standard of 10.6 sec. Sprints The University sprinter. D. Mackenzie, was a cut above the other senior sprinters and scored a good double win in the 75 yards and 220 yards as well as contributing to a clear cut win by University in the four by 110 yards relay. In the second and fastest section of the 75 yards, Mackenzie beat D Minards, who earlier in the season was credited with a 9.9 sec 100 yards, by a yard in 7.9 sec. Mackenzie’s superiority was even more marked in the 220 yards, which he won by nearly six yards in 22.45ec. Making his first appearance at the park this season a former junior national sprint champion. A. Steel, looked most impressive in his run ov.r the final leg of the relay for University and his presence should considerably strengthen the competition in scratch events in the coming weeks. T. Preece (Technical) followed up his marked imnrovement shown in the Canterbury 10-mile championship the previous week with his best three-mile time After a good tussle with the former junior national twomile champion. S. Payne. P-eece cleared away over the la’ter stages to win comfortably in 14m in 50.6sec—12sec better than his previous time In the senior field events, the former national javelin throw champion, R. Ball, was in fine form with the 161 b shot and his distance of 47ft 2t»in was only four inches less than his Canterbury record made in 1959. Ball won the hammer throw with a more modest effort, however, of only 118 ft 4 1 -in. The Olympic representative, Mrs V. I. Young, was not far from her top form with the shot, which she put 51ft 2 s *in. only a few feet short of her best distance A promising effort in the women’s under 18 section was a 16ft 3lin long jump

by Miss L. Curtis (Technical). while only a little behind this was Miss C. Rolton. from the same club, with a distance of 16ft 2in. Abbreviations used in the following results are: (Ang.)
