GLENMARK VICAR

Retirement Next Year

The Rev. Canon W. C. Wisdom, who has been vicar of Glenmark since 1951, has resigned from January 1 next year to retire from parish work because of ill health. He will be succeeded by the Rev. C. S. Knight, who has been vicar of BurwoodMarshland and chaplain of Burwood Hospital for the last 10 years. The Rev. B. A. W. Beckett has been appointed vicar of Burwood-Marshland. These announcements were made yesterday by the VicarGeneral of Christchurch (the Very Rev. M. Sullivan). Canon Wisdom has been rural Dean of North Canterbury since 1953 and an honorary canon of Christchurch Cathedral since 1959. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Canon Wisdom served with the Church Missionary Society in the Diocese of Fukien, China, in 1934. In 1939 he came to New Zealand and was successively vicar of Rakaia Temuka and Sumner. Canon Wisdom has been a member of the Clergy Pension Trust Board for the last 12 years and of the BullockWebster Pension Fund Board for the last 11 years, Mr Knight was ordained by the Bishop of Christchurch in 1938 and served his first curacy at St. Luke’s, Christchurch. Since then he has been successively priest-in-charge of Linwood parish, vicar of New Brighton and chaplain to St. Saviour's Home, Timaru. He will take up his new post next February. Mr Beckett was formerly assistant curate of St. John’s. High field, and has been vicar of Banks Peninsula since 1958. He will take up ills new duties next February. Waikari Vicar The Rev. C. W. Tremewan. formerly assistant curate of Papanui parish and now acting-director of Christian education for the Diocese of Chrtstchurch, has been appointed vicar of Walks ri from next February. Mr Tremewan succeeds the Rev. G. S. Lamont, who will move to the Spreydon-Hoon Hay parish. Mr Tremewan was ordained in 1938 by the Bishcg) of Christchurch, and served his first curacy in St. James’ parish, Ls>wer Riccarton. ;
