PASSENGER CLEARANCE

New System Possible (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 29. The Customs Department is investigating a new clearance system which will allow disembarking passengers to leave a ship—'providing they have completed shipboard immigration formalities—as soon as the gangway is down. A department spokesman said in Auckland yesterday: “There is merit in the idea and the department is always willing to listen to reason.” The law demanded that immigration formalities be completed in the stream before a ship berthed, but there has already been a relaxation of this rule, he said. Shipping company officials said they were willing to cooperate with the department.
