CLIMBING TUITION

Mountaineers On Port Hills

Castle Hill rock on the Port Hills, immediately above th entrance to the road tunnel, was the venue for rock climbing instruction, given yesterday for members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. Nineteen trainees and instructors took part. The subjects taught Included belaying, rope knots, climbing and descending. The activities were filmed by photographers of Channel 3 and will be televised this evening at 8 p.m. The instruction was part of the club’s 1961 climbing course, which comprises three lectures, and a da;- each devoted to practical instruction in rock climbing and river crossing. As well, two days will be spent in the Arthur’s Pass area. On Wednesday evening a lecture, open to all male members of trambing clubs or intending members, will be given in the Pioneer Sports Club on attitudes to safety, bush craft and backcountry stations. On December 7 Mr N. Hardie, who was a member of Sir Edmund Hillary's 19601961 Himalayan expedition, will give a lecture on technique.
