Whitebait On The Wane
The traditional occupation throughout the Buller district on Labour week-end—white-baiting—was a dismal failure this year, no catches of much more than a cupful being reported. However, the anxiety of visitors to secure supplies caused offers up to lls 6d to 12s a pound, but there was no response from sources which normally carry ample stocks. The only good haul made was one of 601 b on Sunday night, when thieves broke open a Westport restaurant’s freezer, and decamped with two 301 b tins. —(PA.)
