Vigil Outside Cathedral
As a protest against the Soviet Union’s proposed 50megaton bomb explosion, members of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament kept a vigil outside the Christchurch Cathedral from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The vigil was kept by four members at a time, who were replaced every hour. Housekeepers, students, and clergymen were among those who made up groups. The branch secretary (Mrs M. Woodward) said the reception from the public was generally sympathetic. The branch sent a telegram of protest to Mr Khrushchev and appealed to him to abandon the test. The vigil coincided with one being held outside the Soviet Legation in Wellington and one outside a leading church in each of the four main centres.
