Greymouth Double To Christchurch Horses

“The Pr»»s” Special Serrte* < GREYMOUTH, October 22. Christchurch horses won both legs of the off-course double on the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting at Victoria Park yesterday

The first leg, the Diggers, Handicap, was wan by, one of the outsiders of the field, Stand In, a six-year-old chestnut gelding by Intruder from Blue Song, owned and trained at Yaldnurst by Mr A. B Holmes and driven by his «on,' A. K. llolme*. Although penalised 24 yards. Stand Xn scored a second win over a shorter distance later in the day. The second leg and main event on the programme was won by Vanesse, a six-year-old dark bay mare by Van Dieman from Audresse. owned by Mr J. M. Stewart and trained for him at Riccarton by D. Donaldson. The double dividend was £Bl3 17s 6d tor £l. The meeting was held in fine, warm weather and there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £23,265 oncourse, including £2086 10s on the double, compared with £23,521 on the corresponding day last year. Stand In was very patiently and capably handled by A. K. Holmes in the Diggers’ Handicap. ,He was always well placed in a trailing position behind Idleman, the leader, and Dorstan. Next in order for two rounds were Sedway and Del Rosa. Going down the back the second last time Carlisle made a fast forward move but at the bell Idleman and Stand In were still clear from Charles Junior, Del Rosa and Dorstan. Idleman faded with two furlongs to run and Stand In went clear to lead into the straight and reach the judge with a length and a half to spare from Dorstan. Del Rosa was three lengths away, a head in front of Sedway, which was followed by Charles Junior. The warm favourite, Bonnieburn, was slow away and was never afterwards prominent. Spring Handicap Del Nuit and Safe Return disputed favouritsm in the Spring Handicap but Del Nuit never left her mark and took no part in the contest. Safe Return had every chance but did not run on after covering a little extra ground. Moneymusk led out from Sea Chase, Vanese, which

began well from the back mark, . Lady Night, Black Stude&t, Safe Return and Maud Noble. With a round to go Sea Chase led Lady Night, Vanese ipullmg hard) and Safe Return. In the back straight Donaldson let Vanese go and she quickly opened up a gap of two lengths from Safe Return. The leader was never in danger of defeat and won by three-quarters of a length from Lady Night. Black Student held on for third, a length and a half away, and then La Storm, Meadow Cheer and Moneymusk crossed the line almost together in front of Safe Return. Maud Noble and Sea Chase.
